Volkswagen's all-new 2017 Golf Alltrack is the automaker's first new entry in the U.S. market in several years, and serves notice that Volkswagen is committed to making innovative, high-quality vehicles that serve a need. In this case, suggests auto writer Dan Neil in a review for The Wall Street Journal, the Alltrack fills the need for a vehicle that comfortably carries family and cargo alike, can get around in any weather via standard all-wheel drive, and isn't a larger-than-necessary crossover model.

The Alltrack features an attractive mix of features, including smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated front seats and leatherette upholstery. It's powered by a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 170 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque. Paired with a dual-clutch automatic and a Sport driving mode, the Alltrack performs more than admirably and the WSJ's Neil calls its reflexes sound, with eager turn-in and assured body control.
