Recently, Volkswagen Group of America and the State of Tennessee announced the creation of a $1 million program that endows middle and high school science labs in Hamilton County, Tennessee. Schools will apply to receive funds from the Volkswagen eLabs program, which provides students access to such emerging technologies as automated manufacturing equipment, robotics, 3D printers, renewable energy kits, programmable microcomputers and several other science-related activities.
The program, managed in conjunction with Volkswagen Chattanooga, will include a competitive selection process that requires that schools commit to either raising a minimum of $5,000 annually or contributing materials so as to ensure that the lab is refreshed and materials are restocked.
In a release, Dr. Kirk Kelly, Hamilton County Department of Education Interim Superintendent, commented, “We are thrilled that Volkswagen recognizes all of the amazing things happening in our schools, and we know this partnership will mean more of our students can access a world-class innovative education."
